About the tour
Waqrapukara means "horn fortress" in Quechua, after the two rock formations rising above the Inca construction that give it a silhouette unlike any other site in Peru.
It sits on an outcrop dropping into the Apurímac canyon at 4,300 metres, reached after about two hours of walking from where the track ends. That access is what keeps it empty: on a normal day you pass more cattle than tourists.
The Inca walls are fitted directly between the two rock towers, using the natural formation as part of the build. It is thought to have been a ceremonial rather than military centre, despite the name.
