Rainbow Mountain
Vinicunca at 5,200 m — the landscape that breaks the internet
About the tour
Photographs of Rainbow Mountain look edited — they are not. Vinicunca owes its bands of red, ochre and turquoise to mineral layers exposed by erosion, and seeing them in person, at 5,200 metres above sea level, is one of the most memorable moments of a trip to Cusco.
We leave Cusco very early for Cusipata, with breakfast on the way, and start the walk towards the Ausangate range. The climb is demanding because of the altitude rather than the distance — it can be taken slowly, and horses are available for anyone who would rather not walk the whole stretch.
At the top, the Ausangate glacier stands behind the mountain's coloured bands. After free time for photographs, we head down for lunch before returning to Cusco.
