About the tour
Huayna Picchu is the sharp peak that rises behind Machu Picchu in every photograph of the citadel. Climbing it changes the scale of everything you saw below: from the summit, at 2,720 metres, the terraces and temples arrange themselves like a miniature plan between two rivers.
The ascent takes 45 to 60 minutes along an Inca path carved into the rock, with narrow steps and cable-secured sections. No technical experience is needed, but a head for heights is. At the top are terraces and the Temple of the Moon, built on a slope where construction seems impossible.
Huayna Picchu permits are capped daily and are the most restricted entry in the sanctuary: book several months ahead.
