About the tour
The one-day Machu Picchu tour works, but it means leaving Cusco before dawn and watching the clock all visit so as not to miss the train. The two-day version removes both.
You travel in the afternoon to Aguas Calientes and sleep there, at 2,000 metres — fourteen hundred lower than Cusco, which also suits anyone not yet acclimatised. Next morning you take the first buses up, as the citadel opens and mist usually still covers it.
With a full morning available there is time to walk all three circuits, sit for a while, and come back down without rushing.
Highlights
