Day-by-day itinerary
Cusco – Soraypampa – Humantay Lake
Transfer to Soraypampa, at the foot of the glacier. Acclimatisation walk to Humantay Lake, turquoise from the minerals in the meltwater. Overnight above 3,800 m.
Salkantay Pass (4,630 m) – Chaullay
The most demanding day of the trek: the climb to the Salkantay pass, the highest point of the route, below the 6,271 m peak. From there, a long descent towards milder terrain.
Chaullay – La Playa – cloud forest
Continuous descent into cloud forest, among coffee plantations, orchids and dense vegetation. The change of landscape and temperature from the previous day is total.
Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes
A walk following the railway from Hidroeléctrica to Aguas Calientes, about 10 kilometres on flat ground, with Machu Picchu appearing above.
Machu Picchu and return to Cusco
Early guided entry to the citadel. A walk through the main sectors and free time. Return to Cusco in the afternoon.
